Why is there a dispute between India and Nepal over Lipulekh?

18 January 2022 Current Affairs And International News

India is currently widening the road to Lipulekh Pass. The Nepalese ruling party has recently issued a statement objecting to this. Nepal has also demanded from India to withdraw its troops in this area. Nepal also claims Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura areas.

What is the latest case?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently said that India is working to extend the road up to the Lipulekh pass. He made these remarks during his visit to Haldwani in December 2021. Since then the border dispute has arisen again.

Map dispute

In 2020, Nepal published the revised political map. The map covered the Limpiyadhura areas, especially the source of the Kali River.

Sugauli Treaty issue

In 1816, British India and Nepal signed a treaty. It was signed after Nepal lost the Anglo-Nepalese war. According to this treaty, the entire plain between the Rapti and Kali rivers would belong to British India. However, the treaty did not talk about the Ridgeline. Subsequent surveys conducted by the British showed the source of the Kali River in different areas. The dispute between the two countries is about the demarcation of this area.

Importance of kalapani

The Lipulekh pass in the Kalapani region is strategically important for the Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage.

The root of the controversy?

At present, all the three regions Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura are under the control of India. But Nepal also claims these areas.

Nepal's stand

According to Nepal, the origin of the Kali River is at the height of the mountain ranges near Limpiyadhura. Thus, the entire slope and area of Limpiyadhura come under Nepal.

India's stand

The border starts from Kalapani, that is, the river starts right from there. According to India, the river originates from the springs of Lipulekh pass. Administrative records of India from the 19th century show that Kalapani was located on the Indian side.

Susta area dispute

There is also a border dispute between India and Nepal in the Susta region. This dispute is about changing the course of the Gandak river.
